An underwire that pokes at the center or sides is almost always the wrong cup size or wire shape for your ribcage, not a defective bra. Going up a cup size or trying a different wire shape usually fixes it.

Why This Happens

The underwire is meant to sit flat against your ribcage, framing the base of the breast rather than resting on breast tissue itself.

When the cup is too small, tissue gets pushed forward onto the wire instead of into the cup, and the wire pokes wherever it’s meeting tissue instead of ribcage.

How to Confirm It’s the Cup

  • The center wire doesn’t sit flat against your breastbone. It stands away from your body.
  • You can see or feel tissue spilling over the top or sides of the wire.
  • The poking is worse at the underarm, which often means the wire is simply too narrow for your ribcage shape.

The Fix

Try a cup size up in the same band first. This gives tissue somewhere to go besides onto the wire.

If the center still won’t sit flat, look for a plunge or shallower wire shape, which is cut differently around the ribcage.

When It Might Be Something Else

If the wire pokes only on one side, check for asymmetry. Fitting to the larger side is usually more comfortable than trying to force both sides into an identical fit.

The 30-Second Self-Check

Look at where the underwire sits at rest. It should trace the crease directly under your breast tissue, lying flat against your ribcage.

Not resting on top of breast tissue anywhere along its length. If the wire tip pokes at the side or the center, that’s a size or shape mismatch, not a manufacturing flaw.

Center Wire vs. Side Wire Poking

Poking at the center gore (between the cups) usually means the cup is too small and tissue is being pushed toward the middle. Poking at the sides, near your armpit, usually means the cup is too narrow for your shape even if the volume is roughly right. A wider-set wire style may solve it without changing your size at all.

A wire that’s simply misshapen from washing or wear (rather than a fit issue) will poke inconsistently and can sometimes be reshaped by hand. Worth ruling out before resizing.

A Quick Self-Check

Check exactly where the wire sits: it should follow your underbust crease and end at your side, resting against ribcage. Not on breast tissue. If the wire tip pokes into soft tissue rather than lying flat against bone/ribcage, the cup is very likely too small for your shape.

How to Tell This Apart From Similar Problems

Poking wire is sometimes mistaken for a band problem, but the band and the wire are different components. You can have a perfectly-sized band with a too-small cup causing wire poke, or a correctly-sized cup with a wire that’s simply the wrong shape (too round or too shallow) for your specific ribcage curve.

What to Try First

Try a different wire shape (many brands offer both rounder and more tapered wire profiles) in your same size before concluding you need to go up a cup size. Shape mismatches are common and don’t always require sizing up.

A Realistic Example

A person whose ribcage has a flatter, more angular shape than average sometimes finds that a standard rounded underwire consistently pokes at the same spot across multiple brands. Trying a brand specifically known for straighter or more tapered wire shapes often resolves what seemed like a persistent, brand-agnostic problem.

•14,890+ Amazon ratings (snapshot)

A light everyday plunge bra with soft mesh-lace edges that lie flat against your chest. It won't gap at the top when you lean forward.

Claire's Fit Note: The band runs true to size, while the cup runs half a size shallow. If you're between two cup letters, pick the larger one.
Why We Like It:
  • Lace edge lies flat on shallow, athletic, or teardrop shapes
  • Low center gore stays hidden under V-neck tops
  • Soft stretch-lace band smooths the back without rolling
Keep in Mind:
  • Too shallow for very projected G+ cup shapes
  • Needs a wash bag or hand washing to protect the lace

Built for fuller busts that need real forward lift. Two-part seamed cups with inner side panels bring breast tissue forward and away from your arms.

Claire's Fit Note: Uses US sizing. Wacoal bands feel firm on day one so they hold their support over months of wear.
Why We Like It:
  • Strong upward lift and a centered shape under shirts
  • Centered back straps stay on your shoulders
  • Tall center gore rests flat against your chest bone
Keep in Mind:
  • Seamed lace gives a classic lifted shape instead of round foam
  • High center gore shows under low plunge necklines

No. A correctly sized wire should be invisible in daily wear. Discomfort is a sizing signal, not something to push through.
