Your size during pregnancy and nursing can shift more than once. That’s normal, not a sign anything is wrong.

Why This Needs Its Own Calculator

Milk supply, engorgement, and swelling all affect measurements in ways that don’t apply outside of pregnancy and nursing. A single measurement taken at the wrong moment (right after a feed vs. right before one, for example) can give two different results for the same body.

When to Measure

For the most usable everyday number, measure mid-way between feeds rather than immediately after one, when you’re at your smallest. Expect to re-measure every few weeks in the early postpartum period as supply regulates.

What to Look For Beyond the Number

Nursing access, hook range for size fluctuation, and soft fabric against sensitive skin all matter as much as the size itself. See our Nursing bra size chart for brand-specific notes.

A Timeline, Not a Single Size

Pregnancy growth, the days when milk first comes in, ongoing breastfeeding fluctuation, and eventual weaning are four different phases. Each with a different accurate size. Expecting one bra to fit all four stages is the single biggest source of frustration here.

Why Waiting Helps Early On

Buying a full wardrobe before milk regulates (usually a few weeks in) often means replacing most of it soon after. Sizes can shift meaningfully during that window. A couple of flexible, wire-free options to start is more practical than a full stock-up.

Features That Matter Most Right Now

Drop-down cups for feeding access, wider bands to handle engorgement swelling, and no underwire early on (which can restrict milk ducts during periods of fullness) all matter more here than in everyday sizing.

Re-Measuring Cadence

Re-measure at the end of pregnancy, again a few weeks after milk regulates, and again if breastfeeding continues past a few months. Three checkpoints instead of one, since this stage genuinely moves faster than most others.

The Four Phases of Postpartum Sizing

Immediately postpartum, swelling and engorgement can temporarily inflate cup size unpredictably. Over the following weeks, as milk supply regulates, size typically stabilizes somewhat.

Mid-nursing, size tends to hold steadier, fluctuating mainly around feeds. After weaning, tissue composition shifts again as milk-producing tissue reduces, often landing at a different size than either pre-pregnancy or peak-nursing measurements.

Nursing Access Styles Compared

Clip-down styles are the most common and generally fastest for one-handed access. Pull-aside and drop-cup designs avoid a visible clip but can be slower.

Full pull-up/tank styles offer the most coverage-free discretion for some people but require removing more fabric. None is objectively best: the right choice depends on what’s actually convenient for how and where you’re nursing.

Why This Tool Uses the Same Core Measurements

Postpartum and nursing sizing isn’t a separate measurement system. It’s the same underbust-and-bust method as the main calculator, just applied to a body that’s likely to keep changing over the following weeks and months. The number this tool gives you is accurate for today; expect to run it again as milk supply regulates or swelling changes.

Nursing Access Doesn’t Change the Size Itself

Drop-cup, clip-front, and pull-aside designs all change how you access the breast for nursing or pumping, but none of them change what your actual band and cup size should be. A nursing-specific style should still be chosen in your correctly measured size, not sized up to compensate for the access feature.

A Realistic Timeline for Re-Measuring

Many people find their size shifts multiple times in the first few months postpartum, then gradually stabilizes, though the exact timeline varies enormously and there’s no single normal schedule. Re-measuring whenever a bra starts feeling noticeably different, rather than on a fixed calendar, tends to work better than guessing at a timeline in advance.

Comfort Fabrics Matter More Right Now

Skin can be more sensitive than usual in the weeks around birth. Soft, breathable, tag-free fabric is worth prioritizing alongside correct sizing, since even a well-fitted bra in irritating fabric will feel wrong.

Tracking Changes Across Multiple Check-Ins

Since postpartum sizing can shift more than once in the first year, it’s worth saving your measurements somewhere private each time you check. This calculator itself doesn’t store anything, so a personal note is the only record you’ll have of how things have changed.

Keeping a Simple Log Helps

Jotting down your band and cup measurement each time you check can make it much easier to spot a genuine trend versus a one-off fluctuation, especially during the fastest-changing early weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A couple of flexible, wire-free options are enough before birth. Wait until milk regulates (usually a few weeks postpartum) before buying a fuller wardrobe, since sizes commonly shift in that window.
