Numbers and letters only tell part of the story. Here’s what cup difference actually represents.

What “Cup Difference” Means

A cup letter isn’t an absolute size. It’s the difference between your bust and underbust measurement. A 32D and a 38D have very different actual volumes despite sharing a cup letter, because the band is so different.

Comparing Sizes Side by Side

If you’re trying to understand how your size compares to another, our Sister size calculator shows the actual relationship, and our individual Size guides cover specific comparisons.

Why We Don’t Use Photos

Bodies vary enormously even at the same technical size, so a single photo per size would be misleading rather than helpful. We focus on the actual measurement relationships instead. The math is more useful than a single reference image ever could be.

What Cup Difference Actually Represents

Each cup letter represents roughly one inch of difference between underbust and bust measurement, not a fixed absolute volume. A “D” cup on a 30-inch band holds noticeably less volume than a “D” cup on a 40-inch band, even though the letter is identical.

Projection vs. Volume

Two people with the same cup letter can look different because cup letter measures volume, not shape. A shallow, wide breast and a smaller, more projected one can land on the same letter while looking completely different in a bra.

Why Photos Alone Can Mislead

Because cup letters are relative to band size and don’t capture projection or shape, comparing your body to a photo labeled with your cup letter often creates confusion rather than clarity. The band number changes everything.

A Better Way to Visualize Your Size

Pair your calculated size with your result on the Breast Shape Identifier- size plus shape gives a far more accurate picture than size or a generic photo alone.

Why Visuals Can Mislead Without Context

A photo or illustration of a cup size shows one specific band-cup combination. The same cup letter looks completely different at a 30 band versus a 40 band, since cup letters are always relative to band size. A visual reference without that context can create false expectations about what a given letter “should” look like.

Using Visuals Alongside Real Measurements

Visuals work best as a rough orientation tool (a general sense of proportion) rather than a precise sizing method. Pairing a visual reference with your actual calculated band and cup gives a much more accurate picture than either alone.

Why Visuals Vary More Than Numbers Do

Two people at the identical cup letter can look noticeably different, because cup size describes volume relative to band width, not shape, density, or how that volume sits on the body. Visual comparisons are useful for building general intuition about the size ladder, but they’re not a substitute for your own actual measurement when it comes to choosing what to buy.

Using Visuals Alongside Your Calculated Size

If your calculated size doesn’t match what you expected based on comparing yourself to visual references, trust the measurement over the visual. Self-perception of size is notoriously unreliable, which is part of why so many people are wearing the wrong size without realizing it.

A Reminder About Body Diversity

The visuals here represent common patterns, not an exhaustive catalog of how every body looks at a given size. Real bodies vary more than any single set of reference images can fully capture.

Why Visuals Can Only Go So Far

Any visual reference shows one example of a given size, but real bodies at the same size vary in shape and proportion. Treat these visuals as a general reference point for what a size range typically looks like, not a promise of exactly how it will look on you.

Lighting and Angle Change How Visuals Read

The same cup size can look different depending on photo lighting and camera angle. Use visual comparisons as a general sense-check alongside your actual measurements, not as the sole deciding factor.

•14,890+ Amazon ratings (snapshot)

A light everyday plunge bra with soft mesh-lace edges that lie flat against your chest. It won't gap at the top when you lean forward.

Claire's Fit Note: The band runs true to size, while the cup runs half a size shallow. If you're between two cup letters, pick the larger one.
Why We Like It:
  • Lace edge lies flat on shallow, athletic, or teardrop shapes
  • Low center gore stays hidden under V-neck tops
  • Soft stretch-lace band smooths the back without rolling
Keep in Mind:
  • Too shallow for very projected G+ cup shapes
  • Needs a wash bag or hand washing to protect the lace

Why We Like It:
  • Strong upward lift and a centered shape under shirts
  • Centered back straps stay on your shoulders
  • Tall center gore rests flat against your chest bone

No. Cup letter is relative to band size and doesn't capture shape or projection, so the same letter can look very different on different bodies.
