Step 1: Snug Underbust Measurement

Wrap the tape snugly right under your bust along your ribcage. Keep it level across your back as you breathe out normally.

Step 2: Fullest Bust Measurement

Hold the tape level across the fullest part of your bust without pressing soft tissue flat.

Every calculator on this site depends on one thing: measuring correctly. Here’s the exact method, in plain language.

Accurate, private, and always free- no signup, and nothing you enter is stored.

What You’ll Need

A soft measuring tape (the flexible kind, not a metal one) and a soft, unpadded bra or no bra at all. Padded and push-up bras distort both measurements.

Step 1: Underbust

Wrap the tape directly under your bust, where a band would sit, parallel to the floor. Pull it snug: it should feel secure but not compressed, similar to a good-fitting waistband.

Step 2: Bust

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, standing naturally with arms relaxed at your sides. Don’t lean forward or pull the tape tight. Let it rest at its natural measurement.

Step 3: Calculate

Enter both numbers into the Main Bra Calculator. The difference between bust and underbust determines your cup; the underbust (rounded) determines your band.

Common Mistakes That Skew Results

  • Measuring over a thick sweater or jacket.
  • Measuring at the end of the day when swelling is at its highest.
  • Rounding the underbust down instead of up.

If your result still feels off after following these steps, our Accuracy guide covers what else might be going on.

Posture While Measuring

Stand naturally, without pulling your shoulders back or sucking in. A posture you can’t hold all day will throw off the number. Breathe normally and measure at the end of a normal exhale, not while holding your breath.

Tape Placement, Precisely

For underbust: the tape sits directly under your bust, parallel to the floor, snug but not compressing skin. For bust: the tape crosses the fullest point, usually across the nipple line, still parallel to the floor even if your body isn’t perfectly symmetrical front-to-back.

Measure Over the Right Layer

Bare skin or a thin, unpadded bra gives the most accurate read. A padded or heavily structured bra adds false bulk to both measurements and skews the result.

Measure Twice

Take each measurement twice and use the average if they differ by more than half an inch. Tape angle and posture drift are the most common sources of a bad first read.

No Tape Measure? Use String and a Ruler

Wrap a piece of string or ribbon around yourself at each measurement point, mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat against a ruler. This works nearly as well as a proper tape measure in a pinch.

Timing Can Matter

Hormonal fluctuation across a monthly cycle can shift bust measurement slightly. If a result feels borderline, remeasuring on a different day is a reasonable check before assuming the calculator is wrong.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Remove your bra or wear an unpadded, unlined one. Wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage directly under your bust, keeping it parallel to the floor all the way around.

Check a mirror or ask someone to verify it isn’t riding up at the back. Note that number as your underbust measurement.

Next, wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, arms relaxed at your sides, tape level again. That’s your bust measurement. Both numbers feed directly into the calculator.

Troubleshooting Common Measuring Mistakes

If the tape rides up at the back, it’s usually too loose or angled. Redo it holding a small mirror to check.

If you get a wildly different number each time you try, take three measurements and use the middle one rather than the first attempt. If your bust number comes out smaller than your underbust, something’s measured wrong. Re-check both before trusting the result.

What to Do If Your Numbers Seem Off

If your result feels clearly wrong compared to how your current bra fits, the most common cause is measuring over a padded or thick bra rather than directly against skin or a thin layer, or letting the tape sag at the back instead of staying level all the way around. Re-measuring standing naturally, without holding your breath or pulling the tape too tight, resolves most unexpected results.

Measuring With Help vs. Alone

Both work fine: having someone help keep the tape level can improve accuracy slightly, but a mirror and careful attention to keeping the tape parallel to the floor works well solo too.

Natori Women's Feathers Contour Plunge Bra

4.6
•14,890+ Amazon ratings (snapshot)

A light everyday plunge bra with soft mesh-lace edges that lie flat against your chest. It won't gap at the top when you lean forward.

Claire's Fit Note: The band runs true to size, while the cup runs half a size shallow. If you're between two cup letters, pick the larger one.
Why We Like It:
  • Lace edge lies flat on shallow, athletic, or teardrop shapes
  • Low center gore stays hidden under V-neck tops
  • Soft stretch-lace band smooths the back without rolling
Keep in Mind:
  • Too shallow for very projected G+ cup shapes
  • Needs a wash bag or hand washing to protect the lace

Why We Like It:
  • Strong upward lift and a centered shape under shirts
  • Centered back straps stay on your shoulders
