Being 'between sizes' usually means your exact measurement falls close to the rounding line between two band or cup numbers. Try both and go with whichever feels snug without digging in.

Being “between sizes” usually means your exact measurement falls close to the rounding line between two band or cup numbers. Try both and go with whichever feels snug without digging in.

Why This Happens

Band and cup sizing works in fixed 1-2 inch increments, but bodies don’t come in fixed increments. A measurement of 33.5 inches, for example, sits right between two standard band sizes. Rounding has to happen somewhere, and different brands round slightly differently.

How to Choose Between Two Sizes

Try the smaller band with the larger cup first. A snugger band with a slightly bigger cup usually gives better support than a looser band. If the smaller band still feels tight even at the loosest hook, go with the larger band instead and adjust the cup with the Sister size calculator.

Brands Vary

Because there’s no single universal sizing standard, one brand’s smaller option might fit better than another’s. Don’t assume “between sizes” means something is wrong with your measurements.

Which Way to Round, By Situation

For the band, round up if your ribcage is fuller or you find snug bands uncomfortable; round down if you want maximum support and don’t mind a slightly firmer feel when new. For the cup, round up if you tend toward gaping fabric rather than spillage, and down if the reverse.

Do Half Sizes Exist?

Some brands offer half-cup or half-band sizes for exactly this in-between situation, though selection is more limited than standard sizing. Worth checking a brand’s full range before assuming you have to round one way or the other.

There’s no wrong answer between two adjacent sizes. Comfort in daily wear is the real tiebreaker, not which number feels more familiar.

It’s More Common Than the Charts Suggest

Standard size charts move in fixed 2-inch band increments and single cup-letter steps, but real bodies exist on a continuous range. Landing between two chart sizes is a normal outcome of measuring a continuous body against a stepped system, not a sign you measured wrong.

How to Decide Which Way to Round

For the band, round toward the snugger size if your ribcage is fuller or less bony, and toward the looser size if bands generally feel uncomfortable on you. For the cup, lean toward the smaller size if you prefer a closer, more contained fit, and the larger size if you’d rather avoid any gaping risk.

Brand Cut Fills the Gap

When you’re genuinely between two chart sizes, brand-specific cut often decides the real answer better than a general rule: some brands’ smaller size in a pairing will fit a between-sizes body better than their larger size, and vice versa for a different brand. This is exactly the kind of case where trying both, if returns are easy, beats guessing.

Rounding Rules of Thumb

When your underbust measurement falls exactly between two whole numbers, the standard convention rounds up to the nearest even number for the band. For cup calculations landing between two letters, leaning toward the larger cup is generally the safer default, since a slightly-too-big cup is a more comfortable mistake to live with than a genuinely too-small one.

When Body Asymmetry Is the Real Cause

If one side consistently measures differently from the other, being “between sizes” may reflect genuine asymmetry rather than measuring error. In that case, sizing to fit your larger side and using a removable padding insert on the smaller side is a common, practical solution rather than continuing to search for one size that perfectly fits both sides at once.

This Is More Common Than It Feels

Being between two standard sizes is extremely common. Bodies don’t sort neatly into fixed increments, and needing to make a judgment call between two close options is a normal part of bra shopping for most people.

Normalizing the In-Between

There’s no need to see landing between two sizes as a personal measuring failure. It’s simply how continuous body variation interacts with a sizing system built on discrete steps.
