A properly fitting bra has a level band that doesn't ride up, a center gore that sits flat against your sternum, and cups with no gapping or spillage.

A properly fitting bra has a level band that doesn’t ride up, a center gore that sits flat against your sternum, and cups with no gapping or spillage.

The Band Check

The band should sit level all the way around. Parallel to the floor, not riding up in the back. If it rides up during the day, the band is too loose.

The Center Gore Check

The center panel between the cups should lie flat against your breastbone. If it’s floating away from your chest, the cups are too small and pushing the gore outward.

The Cup Check

No gapping at the top of the cup (cup too big) and no spillage over the top or sides (cup too small). Breast tissue should be fully contained within the cup with no bulging at the edges.

The Strap Check

Straps shouldn’t dig in or slip off, and they shouldn’t be doing more than about 20% of the support work. If loosening the straps all the way still supports you, the band is doing its job.

If any of these checks fail, run your numbers through the Bra size calculator- most fit issues trace back to the wrong band or cup number.

The Overnight Test

Try on a new bra and wear it around the house for an hour before deciding. A bra that feels fine standing still in a fitting room can reveal band or strap problems only after sitting, reaching, or moving normally for a while.

The Mirror Side-View Check

From the side, the bust should sit roughly midway between your shoulder and elbow. Noticeably lower suggests the band or cup has stretched or was wrong from the start, not that this is simply how the bra sits.

If you’re still unsure after running through these checks, that uncertainty itself is worth acting on. Re-measure rather than assume the bra you have is close enough.

The Band Test

A properly fitted band should feel snug on the loosest hook when the bra is new, sit level all the way around (not riding up in back), and stay in place when you raise your arms overhead. If you can pull the band away from your back by more than an inch or two, it’s too loose regardless of how the cups feel.

The Cup Test

Breast tissue should fill the cup completely with no gaping, wrinkling, or spilling over the top or sides. The center gore (the panel between the cups) should sit flat against your sternum; if it’s pushed forward and not touching your skin, the cups are too small.

The Strap Test

Straps should stay in place without digging in or constantly slipping, and shouldn’t be doing the main work of holding the bra up. That’s the band’s job. If you’re regularly readjusting straps throughout the day, the band underneath usually needs attention first.

The Jump Test

Put on a bra and jump lightly in place a few times, or do a few jumping jacks if you can. A well-fitted bra keeps everything reasonably controlled without major bounce or shifting; if the band rides up or straps slip noticeably during this quick test, that’s more revealing than checking fit while standing still.

Signs It’s Actually a Style Problem

Sometimes a technically correct size still doesn’t feel right because the specific style doesn’t suit your shape. A shallow cup on someone with more projection, or a narrow-set style on someone with wider-set breasts, can create fit complaints that sizing up or down won’t actually solve. If you’ve tried your correct size in multiple styles with the same complaint, it’s likely the size; if only one particular style feels off, it’s likely that style’s cut.

Fit Confidence Builds With Comparison

Trying on your calculated size alongside one size up and one size down, side by side, often makes fit differences click in a way that evaluating just one size in isolation doesn’t.

Fit Knowledge Compounds Over Time

Each time you consciously check these signs, you get better at recognizing your own fit cues quickly. The skill becomes more intuitive with practice, rather than only something to check off a list.

Natori Women's Feathers Contour Plunge Bra

4.6
•14,890+ Amazon ratings (snapshot)

A light everyday plunge bra with soft mesh-lace edges that lie flat against your chest. It won't gap at the top when you lean forward.

Claire's Fit Note: The band runs true to size, while the cup runs half a size shallow. If you're between two cup letters, pick the larger one.
Why We Like It:
  • Lace edge lies flat on shallow, athletic, or teardrop shapes
  • Low center gore stays hidden under V-neck tops
  • Soft stretch-lace band smooths the back without rolling
Keep in Mind:
  • Too shallow for very projected G+ cup shapes
  • Needs a wash bag or hand washing to protect the lace

Why We Like It:
  • Strong upward lift and a centered shape under shirts
  • Centered back straps stay on your shoulders
  • Tall center gore rests flat against your chest bone

A snug band that fits on the loosest hook is normal and expected. It'll have room to tighten as the elastic stretches with wear.
